Driving

Post Fri Oct 26, 2007 7:05 pm

Hi everyone new to this. Well I am planning on moving to Germany near Mannheim to be with my fiancé/soon to be wife early next year. I am still trying to get the basic knowledge of the language but not to to worried about that. I was wondering if anyone knew of any trucking companies in or around the Mannheim area. Also I was thinking that since I have some experience working on farms that maybe I could do that. Anyone that could help that would be great.

We live in Heidelberg which is 20 minutes from Mannheim.
If you want to drive trucks you would need a German truck license plus a good knowledge of German. Farmers dont usually hire help and when they do it is usually from eastern European countries because they are cheap labour and it is seasonal. All i can say is good luck. I was lucky and got a job with the U.S Army. I am Canadian but i was born in England so also hold a British passport and was hired under the German payroll.

I live in Wiesbaden, which is about 1 hour away from Mannheim to the North. If you really want to drive trucks then, like Kirby said, you will need a german truck driver's license, which are not all to cheap (im guessing in the 5000s since a normal car driver's license is about 2000) A good company to work for would be Schenker or DHL they are the too biggest Logistics companies in Germany and probably need a lot of drivers, but there are a lot of opportunities in different companies. About the farm, I wouldn't even go there, its not like in Canada and I dont think the pay is even gonna be worth the work. Most people who go and work on farms are eastern europeans and turks who usually get paid unter the table and are illegal immigrants. You could try, but I wouldn't.

Cheers and Good Luck!
