If you are still in Canada you can go to any CAA store and get an international license for $10 and that covers you for a year at least. Its just a paper booklet with your license info and a description of your equivalent license type should you get pulled over by the police.

You can just trade it in for a UK licence, Alberta and the UK have an agreement. The only snag is by default they will give you an "automatic transmissions only" licence, which is a major problem because cars with auto transmissions are unpopular in the UK. However you can get around it if you can provide evidence to them that the licence allows you to drive manual transmissions. Not sure exactly how you do that, you'd have to phone the DVLA and ask them what proof is sufficient.
