One thing to know is that in general SIN are used a lot less in Canada than SSN in US. The only places that you are legally required to tell your SIN is your employer and your bank.

Generally nobody else should be asking for your SIN. Some do, but it is always noted as optional. I almost never provide it and it has never caused problems.

If you are not looking for employment, the only issue would be the bank. My understanding is that the only reason that they are getting SINs now is because of money laundering and income tax evasion. I have heard of people getting bank accounts without their SIN even relatively recently. I think that if you went in and talked to the manager of the branch and told them the situation, chances are they would give you an account, but may put some limitations on it.

Good luck,
James

When I was ready to apply for my New Zealand residency they required my original birth certficate. I had my parents go to the registry for marriage & births. They got me a notorised copy of the original and air couriered it to me.

Where there is a will there is a way.

Good Luck

I live in Brazil and am planning to move to winnipeg. last December I applied for SIN using my passport and proof of citizenship and that was it.

By the way, I'm really aprehensive about moving. My husband and I got to the conclusion that it would be for the best to go to Canada, after living in Brazil for so many years - here's the perfect place for vacations, but not really to live since there is no real legal safety on anything - I graduated in Law here and I can assure you guys that the legal system in Brazil is a joke. Anyways, after we got held-up last year with a gun pointed at us we decided to move out. We're planning that I'll go first (in about two months) and then he'll follow in September. I'm scared to death of starting from scratch in Winnipeg - although I have family there and of course backup, just the thought of leaving everything behing is overwhelming.

If anyone could recommend good moving services (international), I would really appreciate it.
