HIya!

Credit- yup, you start over from nothing. I lived in the states from the ages of 18-28 and had no credit in Canada. After a few months I was able to get a Zellers card and from there I developed a good credit rating (which is good, cuz my one in the states was HoRRiBle!)

Uhaul- I took a Uhaul from Michigan to Ontario with no probs (though this was pre-9/11). I had called the border prior and they advised me to write an inventory of what I would be taking, so I did that for all the big items and including serial numbrs.

Health care- in Ontario you have to wait three months, I suppose its the same everywhere (?). I wold recommend buying your own until you are covered, but that's just me. In Ontario, prescriptions are not covered by OHIP (health insurance). Check the government website for Quebec and see if they are covered or not.

Apartment- if you do a private letting, I doubt the lack of credit may not be a prob though it will likely be through a company.

Good luck! Canada is great! :)

Are you 100% positive you can't get your SIN?

My girlfriend isn't even a resident and she got one a couple years ago. She's only here on a student visa.

I could be wrong, but you might want to double check -

Good luck!

do you have your birth certificate, and record of your birth abroad? That might work.

One thing to know is that in general SIN are used a lot less in Canada than SSN in US. The only places that you are legally required to tell your SIN is your employer and your bank.

Generally nobody else should be asking for your SIN. Some do, but it is always noted as optional. I almost never provide it and it has never caused problems.

If you are not looking for employment, the only issue would be the bank. My understanding is that the only reason that they are getting SINs now is because of money laundering and income tax evasion. I have heard of people getting bank accounts without their SIN even relatively recently. I think that if you went in and talked to the manager of the branch and told them the situation, chances are they would give you an account, but may put some limitations on it.

Good luck,
James

When I was ready to apply for my New Zealand residency they required my original birth certficate. I had my parents go to the registry for marriage & births. They got me a notorised copy of the original and air couriered it to me.

Where there is a will there is a way.

Good Luck
