Dual Citizenship for my baby?

Post Tue Apr 14, 2009 10:44 am

Hello!

I am currently a Canadian citizen about to marry a British citizen and we're expecting our first baby in July. We're going to have her here in the UK (we live just outside London) and since we plan on visiting Canada fairly soon after she's born, we're aware that we'll need to get her a passport.

We know it's possible to get dual citizenship between the UK and Canada, but we just don't know how to go about doing it... has anyone here done this before?

Is it something that you can just fill out on the passport application? Or do you have to fill out separate applications for both countries? I really have no idea how it all works and I can't find anything online to explain it.

If anyone knows how to do this I would really appreciate your help!
Thanks! :)

hello.

Dual citizenship only means that your baby will have 2 passports. You need to apply the same way you would for one passport. So apply for the Canadian one and apply for the British one.
Just be careful to always show the British passport (for your baby) when you come into the UK and not the Canadian one.

I would suggest that you apply for your baby's British passport first if you are now living in the UK. You only need the Canadian one when you want to return to live in Canada , you can still go on holiday to Canada with the British passport.

Citizenship of the child depends on the laws of each country.

If you are married when the child is born and the child is born in the UK, then it will be british.

Canadian law has just changed on April 17. If you were born in Canada or are a natualized Canadian, then the child will be Canadian. If you were born outside of Canada, then the child will not.

We will be married when it's born, and it will be born in the UK.

I was born in Canada and have only been in England for about 2 years.

I take it that means it will be able to have both British and Canadian citizenship?

The baby will have both citizenships automatically. You do not need to do anything for the citizenships themselves.

You will need to apply for travel documents and proof of citizenship.

A UK passport.

You will also want to apply Canadian passport and Certificate of Canadian citizenship. Definitely apply for them both at the same time. Passport is issued immediately and the certificate of canadian citizenship takes 6-12 months.

I would also suggest you get 2 or 3 LONG form birth certificates when you register the birth of the child. The SHORT form are not useful for anything.
