Hello everyone!

Here's an interesting case for you fellows:
I'm a Canadian citizen, as well as a citizen of Russia. I'm working in Russia right now, but paying taxes in both countries (and I am a resident of Canada). I got married to a Russian girl this fall, using my Russian passport. The question is - should I make Canada aware of the fact that I'm married, and, if so, how do I do that?

In case you wonder why this is an important question: Eventually I plan to come back to Canada and bring my wife along, so my assumption would be that the longer we are married (in the eyes of Canadian law), the easier it would be, no?

Thanks in advance for all the replies!

They don't care how long you're married.

If you're filing taxes in Canada, then you can file as married.

Thanks for your reply!

So there is no such thing as a Canadian marriage certificate that is relevant here?

You only get a Canadian marriage certificate if the wedding is performed in Canada.

Yeah, that's about it. I am married to a Brazilian and we're planning to go back to Canada - last december I tried to somehow "validate" our marriage in Canada, in the Vital Statistics offie and they told me there is no such thing. They only care if you're married for pension and similar stuff. you will, however, when moving to Canada, have to fill out lots of papers and present the marriage certificate or another proof of union if your wife plans to get permanent resident status.
