Dual Citizenship - Photo ID's required.

Post Fri May 22, 2009 1:57 pm

Hi I'm new and I did look to see if this question was answered but I couldn't find anything so I apologize if it repeats.

On the website I have found it states
"a photocopy of your current photo ID (foreign passport or residence card and driving licence)"

I have a Candian Passport, however it is my only form of Photo ID I'm 18 but have never attempted to get my drivers license. Is it okay if I just send a copy of my passport in or do I need to see if I can get a second form of ID to send with it?

Also, I called the british embassy in Washington DC, only to be confused out of my mind. I told the operator there that my father immigrated from Wales and yet she said I needed to apply for citizenship before I could get the passport, but no where on the website does it say I must do that before applying. And the website she referred me to only had the steps for people who lived in the the UK for 5 or 10 years... My question about the needed ID's was unanswered. Can anyone clarify? I'm pretty sure I don't need to take up citizenship as i am a citizen by descent through my father aren't i?

hello,

Are you sure you are a British citizen?
Was your father born in the Uk (with British citizenship)?
Was he married to your mother at the time of your birth?

Yes. My father was born in Wales and immigrated here when he was about 12. My parents were married, I've looked everywhere and I'm more then postive I'm a british citizen.

I'm just not sure about the photo ID's as i only have my passport as a photo ID but on the UK embassy page they ask for a passport and a drivers license, but i dont have my drivers license. So can I just send a copy of my Canadian passport without it getting rejected.

It does look like you are British, so now the passport:

I had a look on the website for British passport application (for Uk citizen in Canada or in the US)

http://ukinusa.fco.gov.uk/en/passports/ ... -documents

As far as I can see , you only need one photo ID

a photocopy of your current photo ID (foreign passport or residence card and driving licence) and

If you read the start of the sentence they just want one of them so you will be ok just sending a photocopy of your passport (along with all the other documentation)

hope this helps

This might be a late reply for you but here goes. 10 year ago when I did this I needed to apply for British Citizenship first through the British High Commission. When I did this it was very expensive and took a very long time but eventually I got my my official citizenship paper which I needed in order to get my passport. I now carry two passports (though never on the same trip).

WillowNadine - was a photocopy of your passport enough? Did they accept it? Did you have to have the photocopy notarized? I have the same problem and am wondering what the outcome of your situation was. I'm sending in my application but need my Canadian passport to travel to France in the meantime!
