Dual Citizenship Question -I have to send them my passport?!

Post Sun Mar 29, 2009 11:42 am

Okay I've read through all the past posts I could find on the subject of Canadians (born after 1983 with a British parent) acquiring a British passport... but this question did not come up...

...on the uk-in-usa or uk-in-canada sites, they list the documents required for applying for a British passport, and one of them is : "the passport used to enter your country of residence (if applicable)"

Can someone shed light on this for me...I have to send in my current Canadian passport? (as a sidenote, I happen to be a resident of the USA at the moment)...but I use my Canadian passport constantly since I travel a lot for work. So I'm not able to send my passport away for any length of time really.

Since I hadn't seen this mentioned in any previous posts I figured that it wasn't applicable to most people, though I don't really understand why or why not it would apply to me. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

yes you have to send your Canadian passport, I don't think there is any way around it but you could try to find out if you could send a certified copy instead (but I don't think they will accept it)

I am a Canadian currently applying for a UK passport (British parents who moved to Canada in 1952) I was born in Canada but am considered a British Citizen by descent.
I have been speaking to the helpline through Washington, DC British Embassy for US and Canada.
It seems you only need to send a copy of your Canadian Passport or whatever other passport you have.
See if you can find the number for the helpline...it's worth the 2.90 per minute (I think that's the rate) to get the right information.
Cheers & Good luck!
