Dual citizenship vs visas...

Post Tue May 17, 2011 9:52 am

Hey everyone!

I just wanted to know if anyone can help sort out an issue...
I'm polish-canadian, working and living in scotland as a polish citizen. I wanted to join the UK army as a canadian...
i don't need any visa as beeing polish (part of the EU) but i do need a visa for the army.
Anybody know which visa, can i apply from the uk for it, and how (if possible)???

thanks in advance,
m.

As a Canadian citizen, unless you're eligible for the YMS visa or UK Ancestry, you'll probably need to get a Tier 2 visa. The thing is we don't know if the UK Armed Forces are registered sponsors... Why would you like to join the army as a Canadian?

Thank you for the reply!

I see I would need sponsors and a valid certificate of sponsorship (from the UK I guess, becuase it doesn't say on the /uk border Agency site... ), but I already work and live in the UK, so does this also apply?

By saying that the UK army may not sponsor such a visa, do you mean that it may not acknowledge it, or that I have to pay/renew it on my own?

I would like to join the army in the UK as a Canadian, becuase I cannot do so as a EU citizen, but seeing the requirments I need to fulfill I got discouraged ...

The UK army might not want to get involved in sponsoring anyone for any type of visa. That is what you will have to find out.

If a visa requires sponsorship, and if they are not willing to give such sponsorship, then you would need another way. Cost is not the issue.

We've checked and the UK Army is not on the registered sponsors list, which means that they don't act as sponsors at the moment. You can give them a call to see if applying for a license would be something they could consider but our feeling is that if they're not registered yet, they don't intend to sponsor anybody in the near future.

As a Polish citizen, you can work in the UK without a visa, but non-European citizens need visas to do the same. The employment categories have reduced significantly over the past few months. The main employment category is now Tier 2 for skilled workers who are sponsored by a UK employer. Besides Tier 2, Canadians can also apply for UK Ancestry if they have a grand-parent born in the UK or under the Youth Mobility Scheme category if they're between 18 and 31 years old.
