Hello,
I'm working in Seattle on a TN visa. My wife is pregnant and will be giving birth in a few months here in the US. I want to get the baby an RESP, my question is, how do I get the baby a SIN? I know the baby will be a dual citizen, but how do I get the baby's Canadian citizenship?

Thanks,
Joel

Go to the nearest Canadian consulate and register the birth there.

I'm sure you're aware of it but just in case you aren't, this could be a problem if (a) you have moved your tax home to the US or (b) you plan on doing that, as the US does not recognise Canadian tax shelters.

It only makes sense if you plan on moving back. Bear in mind also the child will be a US citizen, which means they must file a 1040 every year regardless of where they live, which can lead to problems because of income from a Canadian tax shelter, you might want to run that past an accountant in Canada who has experience of cross-border tax issues.
