You are really only required to show your german passport when entering germany (and it is wise to show it when entering EU). Otherwise, you should just use your Cdn one, especially when returning to canada.

You never really want to show both. This always makes border officers nervous.

Thanks for clearing this question up. My daughter is Mexican-Canadian (born in Mexico to Canadian parents) and for her first trip to Canada recently we got a Canadian passport for her but neglected to get a Mexican passport. Returning home to Mexico, I'd forgotten to bring her birth certificate, so she needed to enter Mexico as a tourist using her Canadian passport. Not a problem at all, but demonstrative of the greater ease of simply having two passports and using the one that makes it simplest to enter a country.

... except that merely travleing with her Mex passport would have been fine, since she WAS entering canada as a tourist.

No, not at all. Had we done that, then we would also have needed to get a visa for her...an extra 100 dollars. It was much simpler to have her use her Canadian passport as a Canadian to enter Canada.
