Dual Citizenships

Post Sat Jul 12, 2008 11:33 pm

My girlfriend and I are looking into the possibility of obtaining dual citizenships in Canada and the United States. My girlfriend was born and has lived her whole life in the United States, but her mother is a Canadian citizen and permenant resident of the United States. Her father is an American citizen. Is she able to to apply for dual citizenship in Canada and the US? Would I also be able to apply for dual citizenship when we get married? Also how would we go about this?

I think it depends on how long her Mother had been out of Canada when your girlfriend was born, and what year she was born. If her Mother registered her birth abroad and got her a Canadian birth certificate, that would be extra helpful to her, if not, the paperwork to gain Canadian citizenship may be a bit tricky.

See information on the CIC website

As for you gaining US citizenship, where do you currently live? If you live in Canada, and you plan to live in the US, your girlfriend would have to sponsor you for a K1 fiance visa, or you get married first and your then wife would sponsor you for a spousal visa (either K3 or CR1). All 3 of your choices take about 1 year to process. You would have to apply for permenanet residency to the US and remain a resident of the US (and married to her basically) for 3 years before you can even apply for citizenship.
