Duel citizen- want to work in USA

Postby cszabo » Mon Mar 30, 2009 3:19 pm

I am a duel citizen. Born in Canada, but mother is American. I have SIN number and want to work in the states. Is there anything I need to do/forms etc. to accomplish this?

Are you actually a dual citizen, i.e. have you got a US passport or a US citizenship certificate?

Adult children (21 or older) have to be sponsored, have a read of: http://www.uscis.gov/propub/DocView/afmid/dat/I_130.PDF

There's also a lot of information on www.amcits.com, how to register births in Canada, obtain social security number, etc.

You are most likely considered to be a US citizen under US law. Check here for more details: http://travel.state.gov/law/info/info_609.html

Did your mother report your birth to a US consulate in Canada? http://travel.state.gov/law/family_issu ... h_593.html

Assuming this was done, you will need a copy of your FS-240 (U.S. consular report of birth) in order to obtain a US Social Security number, passport, etc. This form is your proof of US citizenship.

You will need to apply for a Social Security number in order to work here. A Canadian SIN will not get you anywhere in the US.
