Duel citizenship

Post Tue Sep 04, 2007 10:33 am

My son was born in Canada in 1983 and when we moved back to the USA I was told that he had a duel citizenship as I am a natural born US citizen and his father at that time was a natural born Canadian citizen. Now we find out that my son can not get a passport here in the USA. Mike was never registered in the US embassy in Montreal because we did not know he had to be. Now they tell me that we have to go out of the US to register him which means he may not be able to get back. HELP! Thanks

Contact the US consulate http://www.amcits.com/index.asp and find out about the registration of birth abroad to get him a US birth certificate. This is normally done when the child is first born, rather than 20 odd years later, but I think they should be able to process it anyhow, with copies of your son's birth certificate and a copy of your birth certificate and record of how long you were out of the US before your son was born. I believe if you were out of the country for xx number of years, he would not be eligible for US citizenship based on your birth.
