Hello. I am currently living and working in Ontario and dating a lovely woman from the Detroit area. Are there rules on how often I am allow to visit her? Also, when and if the day comes that i decide i would like to marry her would it be easier for her to move here to canada or for myself to move to the US? her family is all in the US so we'd still have to get across the border a lot to visit. And; when she visits me in canada does anyone know if she's allowed to bring her pet dog? she's scared to bring it thinking they may take it from her. She is in the teaching profession; does anyone know if she can teach in canada without having to go back to more college training? lots of questions i know but no other sites out there seem to have any answers and i dont want to give her up just because we weren't born in the same country. Thank you for any and all answers you may have

If you're willing to get married, I think either option is fairly easy, assuming you are Cdn and US citizens respectively.

ive read some people saying where it takes years for them to let you live in the states tho.
I can't imagine only being able to see her once a month; that's absurd. What's the fastest most efficient way to go about relocation to either her in the states or her coming to live here?

Depends how you go about it really and which visa you choose to go for. And sometimes paperwork does fall thru the cracks and get lost on someone's desk so takes longer than the average. There's not much really that can be done about that however, its government, they suck Razz Wink

Your girlfriend should be able to bring her dog to visit Canada, she will just need to get a certificate of health from her veterinarian, and make sure the dog's rabies vaccine and other vaccines are up to date, and should carry that with her whenever the dog travels with her.

I would say it's easier for you to go to the US, marginally, because of the US foreign tax credit limit on non-resident Americans. If she's a teacher in Detroit I doubt she would hit it but in any event if she moves to Canada she will always have two tax returns to do.

It doesn't take that long to get a visa. Roughly seven months to get to the interview and the interview would take max. two months to get depending on which consulate you use.

Doing it the other way around takes the same amount of time pretty much so visa-wise there's no real advantage either way.

Eventually they will determine that you're spending too much time in the US and could deny you from entering. As Canadians we can spend up to 6 months in the US per calendar year, but if you go back and forth and the border officials get to know you, they sometimes can get cranky. You can't "unofficially" live in the US without a proper visa, and if you're in the US more than in Canada, they'll figure you're "living" in the US.

"Sometimes" - massive understatement. I went to Montana last week. As per usual I got sent to secondary inspection.

"Sir, I need you to fill in this I-94 form."

(Scribble)

" 'Not staying' is not an acceptable answer to the question asking for your address, you must tell us specifically where you are staying in the US."

"Er, I'm going shopping."

"You must fully answer the question, where are you going in the US."

"Er, I'm going to the mall and the gas station."

"Put down the address of the mall."

So I put down "the mall". Rolling Eyes

And thus America becomes a safer place.
