EI- maternity/parental leave

Post Wed Oct 21, 2009 12:20 pm

I have been commuting back and forth on and off for the past few years from Santiago, Chile to Toronto as an airline employee. I work for a canadian airline in Canada and fly back and forth several times a month. I have never established my residency status. I received EI for mat leave in 2007 and once again on mat leave now. I know you are allowed to receive it while out of the country as long as you let them know about it, which I did the first time. This time I was worried because they could catch on to me actually living here and cut me off or worse yet make me pay 2007 back. Unlike most, I want to make sure I remain a resident, factual or deemed in order to not loose benefits.
I still have driver's lic, bank account, credit cards, OHIP.
I haven't even filed my 2008 taxes not knowing which one to fill out.
Anyone know anything about this?

Lots of airline employees do what you do.

Since you work for a CDn company, you have to file Cdn taxes regrdless of where you live, so you might as well file now.

Your mat EI is not in jeopadrdy, so make sure you inform them where you are.
