Electing to pay CPP while working overseas

Post Mon Apr 04, 2011 10:25 am

Hey guys,

I'm moving from Halifax to Qatar to work there. I won't be a resident of Canada while away. I won't even have a permanent Canadian address. I still want to keep paying for my Canada Pension Plan using my foreign income. Can I do that?

Thanks.

EDIT: Found out the answer.

I can if my employment is either:
"Employment outside Canada where, under the laws of the other country, you did not have to contribute to a plan that is similar to the
CPP"

Or:

"Employment outside Canada by a Canadian employer (including the federal government), and the employer has not agreed to cover
the employment under the CPP."

Nope. Read the 1st line of the form:

You need to maintain Cdn tax residency to contribute.

This is for people who go outside canada to work, but keep their family etc in Canada and remain resident -- and continue to report world income.

You are not doing that, so no CPP contributions.
