I was just wondering if anyone knows if there are opportunities to write for Canadian publications while not living in Canada. I am in Cyprus and have a difficult time making ends meet. The average wage is about $1,500 per month less than the cost of living. I am not kidding!!! Prices are set for the wealthy Brits and Russians who come here to retire and for wealthy Cypriots who have sold their properties for insane amounts of money to these people. Ice cream is $16 a litre. Couches I just saw in an advert yesterday run about 6,000 euro, made with cheap leather. Anyway, if you have any ideas on writing opportunities, please drop me a note. Thank you. I am Roberto.

Hello Lobenstein,
Yes there is a publication called 'Writers Market' which is a thick book showing all the places to market your writing, whether it be books, magazines, articles, etc. It also tells you how/where/when and how much each pays. It's an incredible resource and comes out re-done each new year.
Hope this helps, don't give up!

My employer wants me to apply for a tourist visa so that I can go there easily with their help. And once I get there they will process my paper to have a working visa and eventually apply for permanent residency in Canada. It's illegal for them to charge you for this, there's been a lot of concern lately about employment agencies hiring Filipinos and charging them for all sorts of things. If they're acting as an agent for an employer who wants to hire you, the employer pays the fees - not you.

If you show up with a tourist visa and say you're looking for work that will also be a problem obviously, CBSA will pick up on that. I wouldn't do it unless (a) you get a work permit initially and (b) you aren't being charged for the paperwork.

Is it hard to get a work permit there? I'm dealing with the same thing here and I want to know if I'll wait for my work permit or apply for a tourist visa. Thanks!

It depends on whether you have a sponsor and whether you can get labour certification for that job from HR Canada (this is the Canadian equivalent of the Dept of Labor in the US). Have a look on the HR Canada website: http://www.rhdcc-hrsdc.gc.ca
