English High School in Frankfurt

Post Mon Jun 09, 2008 3:31 am

I am a Canadian citizen being posted to Frankfurt this July along with my wife and 15 year old daughter, and we are faced with an extremely difficult situation. As far as we can determine, there are 2 suitable schools in or around Frankfurt where she could complete the last 2 years of her high school diploma. Unfortunately, the FIS school in Oberursel does not have any space available for this fall (she is 10th on the waiting list the last time we checked) and there is a very good chance she will not qualify for the IB program at ISF in Sindlingen.
I would expect that, given the lack of available space at FIS in Oberursel, and the entrance restrictions surrounding the acceptance process at ISF, there would be other English speaking families in Frankfurt in the same situation as ours. We are thinking that as a last resort we might have to enroll our daughter in a German school for the time being until space becomes available at FIS, though this is a very undesirable and upsetting solution for a 15 year old who is almost done with her high school, as it will most certainly mean a lost year for her. That being said, if we do pursue this route of last resort, the last thing we want to do is have her in a school where she is the only “Auslanderâ€

Im in the exact same situation as Victoria. Im a 17 year old expat living in the frankfurt area, my dad was sent over by his company. I wanted to go to one of those international schools but they were full and really overpriced. I ended up going to a german school. It was really hard at first but once you get a grip on the language its not that bad, although I have to point out that the german school system is different and more complicated than the Canadian one. If Victoria plans on continuing to college either here or in Canada she will have to finish the Gymnasium which goes up to grade 13. If Victoria does choose to go to a german school she will most likely loose a year (I did too) and if she wants to finish the gymnasium she will loose another year because it goes up to grade 13 not 12 like in Canada. Although loosing 2 years sounds bad,it gives you more time to get ready for college. Most of my friends back home told me that they're not even ready for university at 18 and some of them that have already started university said they ended up failing courses because they dont know the material well enough because they never had it in high school. This is what motivated me to go to a german school. You get more time to think about and get ready for university and german schools do cover more advanced material than canadian high schools. The only downside to german schools is getting into the right one. If you do choose to send victoria to a german school send her to a GYMNASIUM not a Realschule and especially not a Hauptschule. This is really important because the Realschule and Hauptschule are low level schools, the gymnasium is the best choice!
As for the US Army schools, I really doubt that they will accept victoria because they are only for children of service members.
I hope this helps, if you have any other questions about german schools I'd be happy to answer them.

I go to the Frankfurt International School, I'm in my last year now and I would really try to stay away from german schools. I'm half German and even I think German school is way different and unbelievably hard. I think you should check out the European School Frankfurt, if you haven't already. I know some people who also didn't get into FIS and therefore go to ESF and they absolutely love it.

There is an English- speaking, faith based, international boarding school not terribly far away -- Black Forest Academy. It may be worth you checking out. I have hear many good things about the school from teachers, students, and graduates alike.
