Entering on a Tourist Visa before YTH Mob Visa expires?

Hi,

I am currently in the UK on 2 year Youth Mobility visa, which expires on September 1, 2011. I am abroad for work at the moment, but I will be re-entering the UK on August 9. My partner and I are travelling to India on September 14, 2011, and I have just found out that the process for non-UK citizens to apply for an India tourist visa in the UK takes a minimum of 15 working days.

I am wondering if I can re-enter the UK this time on a 3 month tourist visa instead of the Youth Mobility visa, even though I still have a few weeks validity, so as not to be caught out if my India visa application takes more than 15 days?

What happens if you over stay your visa by a couple of days then leave and re-enter the country on a tourist visa?

Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated as I am pretty worried about it!!

You won't be allowed in the UK if your YMS is still valid. You're also be likely to be refused if you leave the UK for a couple of days after your YMS has expired and try to re-enter as a tourist.

Your safest bet would be to go back to Canada (we assume you're Canadian) and apply from there for your Indian visa or alternatively, begin preparing your application right now so it's ready to submit when you're back in the UK on 09 August. However, no matter what happens with your Indian visa application, you'll have to leave the UK by 01 September otherwise you'll be an overstayer.
