Entertainment Jobs in the US

Post Fri May 09, 2008 12:17 pm

I am a Canadian resident with some experience in the entertainment business.

I have applied to a couple jobs in the Us with the standard response."local applicants only"

I am very discouraged as this is what I do (music business) with my life.and I can't get anything

What do you guys think is my best bet?

Is there sites that specialize specifically in sponsored jobs etc.

I think you can get a shot if your really go for it. I know a lot of Canadians who are in the entertainment business. Keanu Reeves, Brendan Fehr.

Lots of artists get their start in Canada and then break into the US market. Try Canada first, get known, get a name for yourself, then try again.

It's not lawful under the Equal Employment Opportunity Act for them to discriminate against you. Not exactly a fun way to try and get a job to threaten to sue them, but if they won't even give you an interview then technically they are breaking the law and you can report them to the Dept. of Labor.

The problem is that there's also no obligation for them to sponsor you for any sort of immigration category, so although technically you have a leg to stand on, in reality you don't.

Honestly I think your best bet is to move to BC if you want to work in the entertainment industry, get a job with a company there and get transferred to the US.
Steve.
