Just found this website/forum! Great to know know there's help out there!

As a Canadian (ex-Brit):

Can I live in the UK for a short period (during mothers illness) without informing the authorities?

Which authorities should/do I inform?

What are the tax implications (not planning on working in the UK)?

Is there a maximum duration I can stay?

Thanks ahead if anyone can help.I'm sure there will be lots more questions coming, but this is a start.

What do you mean by "ex-Brit"? Are you a UK citizen? Are you also a Canadian citizen?

If you are dual citizen, you shouldn't need to notify anyone, except possibly your provincial healthcare if you plan to be over there more than 5 months. There may be some form you need to fill out to extend your coverage.

REBA: Thanks for the reply.

Yes, I was born in the UK and became a Canadian citizen about 20 years ago. I wondered if I have to tell the Canadian gov't that I will be gone for an "extended period" (during my mothers illness.Months? Years?)

If I become a (temporary) resident of the UK again will the British gov't start to tax me, for example interest on savings? Do I inform them, on arrival at Manchester, that I won't be using my return half of the air ticket?

I intend to keep my Canadian bank account and withdraw money from that account for my use in England (like Visa of Mastercard).

From what you say, Reba, I might have to let the Ontario Health folks know that I am leaving for more than 5 months?

Do I let the UK health folks know that I am "back - temporarily" and set up a plan for health coverage, if I have need for it?

What I wonder about is that you will be here for an indefinate amount of time but without working/income during the duration. What I would look into if I were you is an extended holiday maker/vacation visa. So long as you dont intend to live here permenantly/work here or claim benefits, you should be fine. if however you start tresspassing into those areas, I can see the UK govt agencies not being too happy about it if you dont declare your intentions beforehand.
