Ex Canadian Citizen/Expired Passport - can i go back again ?

Post Fri Jun 25, 2010 2:45 pm

Hi, i hope someone can help guide me to the answers of a couple of questions.
Firstly my history. 1990 i emmigrated to Winnipeg, with my parents, as a sponsored dependant at age 23. I worked fulltime in Winnpeg for over 3 years, gained my Citizen status and Canadian passport, then trvelled and ended back in UK. Now 43, married with 2 young children, i would like to know if i am still classed as a Citizen, even with an expired passport i didnt renew ? My parents are still in Winnipeg since 1990, although i dont want to go back there ! (TOO COLD !), but my Husband and i would seriously like to consider moving out to Canada permanantly.
Do we stand a chance ? Are we able to "just do it" ? Or are my Citizenship and passport an issue and i have to reaply ? I would love some guidance in this area of unknown please.

Thank you . Regards Michele :)

Of course, you are a Canadian citizen! Passport expiry is not citizenship expiry.

You need a valid passport (any country) to travel, but your citzenship card is always valid as proof of citizenship.

Your spouse would need to immigrate, with you as sponsor, that should be pretty easy. Your children are Cdn too.

thankyou Agnelson for the confirmation that myself and my daughters are eligable to just go to Canada and call it home again.
My Citizenship card is in my 1st married name, i have divorce papers and married certificate for my current 6 year marriage, so would i need to update this Citizenship to my current married name ? If so, how/where do i do this ?

Final question, if we choose a Canadian destination, and we would have to give it some thought to where to settle, if my Husband is the only holdback for our family, then how do i sponsor him ? Do i apply to Canadian Embassy in London first, get approval, then we go ? Or can we go to Canada, then apply from there ?

Again, guidance gratefully appreciated too.

regards Michele

There are Cdn immigration websites, consult there.
You do not need to change your citizenship card for your name at this point.

As long as your kids have a UK passport they should be able to travel to canada -- it could take upto 2 years to get cit card for them, so there is no point trying that now.

Thanks again Agnelson.
Slightly confused here. Are you saying i can just move with kids now ? and can apply for their cards and update my name from Canada when i live there ?
Also, you didnt answer my question ref my Husband, can he come out with me, then apply from Canada to stay, me sponsring him, or do we have to apply now for him to be able to go and once accepted, we are free to go as a family ?

Sorry for all the questions, but i found the Canadian Exmbassy website most confusing and unhelpful.

kind regards
Michele

I answer what I can. You should be contacting an expert in Cdn immigration on the best way for your husband to immigrate.

You children are Cdn citizens, so can go to canada without immigrating, of course, and without a Cdn passport. But for travel they will need a passport. A Cdn passport will take a long time: I suggest you use their british one to travel. There is no hurry to get the proof of Cdn citizenship. Cdn immigration officials are familiar with Cdn citizenship laws.

I couldn't agree more.

thanks,
from your help, i have found links to the forms i need to start to complete for sponsoring my husband etc.
it feels good knowing we can easily go out there and no age limit etc.
UK is not what it used to be anymore. Work harder and get no where for it. Not saying Canada will be better in this area, but the bonus is, you'll get more sq ft of home and space for your money out there, than the shoe boxes with high mortgages here in Surrey !! That has to be worth packing the bags and following your dreams
