Hi all,
I am a non-resident Canadian in Northern Iraq and have been struggling with banking issues since I arrived. In each of the other countries I lived in, I set up bank accounts, credit cards, and mutual funds. I took the pension lump sums from the former jobs and countries and reinvested into mutual funds in the new country.
Now I am in Iraq. What this means is that I have NOWHERE to invest. The banks are not insured (my first year here, I set up an account at a bank that went under 3 months later - I was one of the lucky few who was able to recover what I had saved) and the safest means of saving is to stuff my money under my mattress or wire it home. And home, I cannot find anyone who will let me buy funds or set up an RRSP as I am a non-resident. Does anyone know of an easy way to set up accounts for non-residents that will enable me to earn more on my savings than the measly amount added to non-resident savings/checking accounts at CIBC?
