Experiences crossing into Canada for Christmas (gifts)?

Post Mon Dec 05, 2011 1:36 pm

Hi there. I'm looking for your experiences crossing the border to go home to Canada for Christmas. Our whole family is in Canada, so we'll be bringing Christmas gifts o' plenty. I just read something to the effect that we are only allowed a maximum of $60 per person? Do they ask you that at the border? I bought my mom some earrings at JCP on Black Friday that were regularly $600 for under $100. Will I have to show a receipt for what I paid for them? If I don't have the receipt, will they assign them a value? I'm not going to pay duty and taxes on the original value, for sure!

Do I need to have a list of the gifts and who they are for? receipts? Dh had the Costco one and I'm sure he tossed it already.

Is this going to be a complete nightmare? We plan to cross at Sarnia on December 23rd.

Just to be clear, you are allowed to bring in an unlimited ammount of less than $60 gifts. with no problem with tax or duty. But any single gift over $60 is itself taxable, and possibly dutiable.

You would pay GST/HST (and possibly duty) based on the purchase price of the >$60 gift.

You should have a list ready.
