Expired Passport and Visa

I am a Canadian Citizen with a L1B Visa in Boston. I`m planning to spend 10 days during Christmas time in Montreal (driving there), but my daughter passport has expired. I know that we can cross borders with a birth certificate (she`s Canadian as well) but will the US let her in back? We have her expired passport and this little stapled paper they give at the customs. Have you had similar experiences ?
