Extend 6 month visitor stay?

Depends on the specific law and what the purpose is, they can share things like manifests under the various anti-terrorism laws so they will at least have your name and the date you entered the US on both sides of the border. Date you came back to Canada though going through a land border? Hmm, I don't think they do. Not yet anyway. But from what I've read about the WHTI I think they will start keeping track next year.

The Border Patrol have access to the USCIS entry records too, so if you get caught in a spotcheck in the US (which can happen e.g. on ferries near the border or roads near the border) they will know how long you have been in the country.

In regards to the US having record of when Canadians re-enter Canada and vice versa via land crossing, what about when we re-enter at the airport? For example, when I fly back into Canada I don't believe that I go through US authorities that stamp or scan my passport and make record that I am leaving the US and entering Canada, therefore, when I re-enter the US, would they even know how long I was there the last time?

I'm just really worried about over staying my 6-month visitor allowance, and I would really like to stay 2 additional weeks to complete my paperwork. Therefore, I am wondering if it's feasible to think that if I fly back 2 weeks late, then re-enter with my TN application, that they won't even know that I overstayed 2 extra weeks because they wouldn't even have record of when I left - is this correct?.

Yeah, but (a) they have a copy of the flight manifest so they know you left (if they go to the bother of checking) and (b) CBSA has a record of your entering Canada. Supposedly. And they're supposed to be sharing this information under WHTI but I'm not sure how far they've gotten with it yet.

I know for a fact CBSA doesn't currently have a record of when you left Canada because I got sent to secondary inspection once when I flew to Calgary and they showed me the computer screen and they had zero information, so USCIS apparently doesn't share their entry information with CBSA at the moment.

If you want to get really worried read this: http://www.boingboing.net/2007/12/16/ic ... st-to.html

All because she overstayed B-2 status ten years ago.

Re: entering to attend a career expo conference and networking e

I have received information about a career conference and expo 2 day conference to be held in the US. Obviously one is not allowed to enter to look for a job and that is clear. The conference is about general leadership and discussions around that, with a few companies presenting on new trends etc.

It's pretty clear that the POE officers will interpret it as someone going in to look for a job and if that is the case, I might as well cancel the trip altogether as it is not worth my time and hassle.

Any comments or ideas on whether this might work as its a combination of networking and discussions for the most part.

thanks

To lay this issue to rest,

YES. We do know when you enter and leave the country, whether it by Air, Land or Sea. The only time we don't know is when you cross ileagally avoiding a POE. There is, and always has been a record of every crossing. And as usual, Steven is right, with WHITI, there is no chance of you slipping through un-noticed.

Danny, just say you're going to a convention because that's what it sounds like to me.

The real crunch date on WHTI is supposedly October 26, 2016 iirc unless they move it back again (again).

At this point all Canadians will have to have some sort of RFID-enabled ID to cross the border, i.e. EDL, EIC, NEXUS card, FAST card or passport. (The RFID chipped passports have a picture of a chip on the front).

CBP is investing huge sums of money in RFID-enabled card readers and so on at POEs.

If you're going across legitimately, this will be helpful to you because you can waft your passport or whatever in front of the reader and it should shorten the entry procedure.

However because it's an integrated IT system, deceiving it will be much harder, which is the point, obviously. Your entry record will be tied to the RFID(s) (because you may have more than one ID).

The only real question is how helpful CBSA and the Canadian Govt. are going to be. Putting RFID chips in passports appears to be a major challenge for them although a lot of EU countries are already doing it.

Does Canada and the U.S share information at border crossing. I want to go home to Canada and overstayed in the U.S. I'm not worried about getting back in the U.S, just want to go home but will the Canadian border know when I entered??? They always ask , "how long were you in the U.S"
