F2 Visa and taxes

Post Sun Apr 03, 2011 3:23 pm

Hello,

I will be moving to the US on an F2 visa, while my wife attends grad school.

Right now I make part of my annual income trading stocks, but not enough to incorporate.

I want to use my two years in the US to make a go at becoming an independent investor, but am wondering how this works in conjunction with my F2 visa status. Does this qualify as work? If so, is there a different visa I should be trying to get? Do I pay capital gains taxes to the US, or do I still pay them with a Canadian tax return?

I'll probably have more questions, but those are the main ones at the moment.

Thanks in advance.
