Facing an uncertain future

Post Thu Apr 17, 2008 12:33 pm

Wow. I don't know where to start this, so I'm sorry for the scatter-brain approach. Moved down to NC on a L1A visa with a bank, and was just let go yesterday. I'm certain that my Visa no longer applies, and we'll need to move back to Canada.

Now. we own our home down here, but given the uncertain real estate market I'm not sure we can sell it or recover what is owed on the mortgage.

Does anyone know if a US foreclosure can impact or access any of our Canadian funds?

Given that we (a) can't work in the US (assuming my VISA is now invalid. please advise if there is an alternate process) and (b) need to move back to Canada, therefore need to find housing back home. I don't know how we can float two mortgage payments - hence I'm thinking about foreclosure or bankruptcy in the US.

Advice / help?

foreclosure and/or bankruptcy could very well follow you to Canada. The 2 countries use the same credit bureau companies.

Yes, unfortunately if you are not working for the company that sponsored your visa, it is no longer valid, so you'd have to leave, AFAIK. (I used to have an L1B, it was taken out of my passport by CBP when I was laid off from the company that sponsored it).

I'd speak with a financial advisor to figure out what is your best option, and perhaps a realtor to find out the current market in your neighbourhood.
