Filing non-resident in 2010 or 2011 tax return?

Post Sat Apr 23, 2011 10:23 am

I'm using Ufile to file my taxes and I'm wondering if I should indicate on 2010 tax return that I've left. My summer internship in Canada ended in Sept and I went abroad for another internship and then vacation abroad until Jan 2011 - stopped in Canada between the internship and vacation.
Came back early Jan and stay for a few days before I packed my bags and left for the US.

I don't want to end up filing income taxes for both US and Canada in 2011 and technically I wasn't living in Canada since Sept however, I didn't get my current rental place in US until Jan 2011.

My parents are in Canada, I just graduated so I don' t own any rental properties; I do have some bank accounts and credit cards though; student loans were paid off in 2010. Is this enough to be deemed non-resident in 2011? What about 2010? I decided to start work in 2011 instead of 2010 to avoid filing US taxes. Could I claim moving expenses in 2011 US tax return and if I do will there be a problem if I deem myself as non-resident in 2010 in Canada?

Could someone advise me as to what to do in this situation?

Thanks

You did not establish tax residency outside canada in 2010, so you should file a regular 2010 return, with the province you lived in until you left canada.

You will file a departure reurn for 2011, with jan departure date.
