Finding a Flat in Bristol

Hi everyone.
I recently relocated to Bristol, UK.
I learned that finding a flat is a nightmare...
As I am a young professional, I would like to find an independent flat.
However, the price is ridiculous... I really don't understand why I, as a renter, need to pay a tax and real estate agent fee. It is very strange for me to understand.
I would like to stay in Clifton/Redland area but the rent is ridiculous.
Anyways... yeah... I am very frustrated.

I'm a Canadian coming to the Bristol area. What tax do you need to pay? I do understand the real estate fee as that is how the agency gets paid. Clifton is the most sought after area of Bristol, so you would expect it to be expensive.
