I have just come back from Melbourne and many people rent property there, and many people own pets, I don't forsee any difficulties. Australians are also good animal lovers and care for them like the Canadians. Google realty estate agents in Melbourne and give them a call, the calls are reasonably cheap from Canada and the Aussies are very helful so you should get heaps of assistance.

Good luck

Hi,

I don't think you will have any problems renting a place with a cat. But ultimately it will be at the landlord's discretion. Dogs are a different matter.

Some people try to hide the fact they have pets when applying for a rental property and sometimes they get away with it. But others have been kicked out for lying.

One thing you should know, there is a rental shortage/crisis across Australia at the moment so expect to pay a bit more for rent.

Of course, what you pay will depend on where you end up living.

Melbourne is a great city an in some ways is a bit like Toronto. Some Canadian friends of mine think it's more like Montreal. I lived in Toronto and thought it was very similar to Melbourne in its layout, with its streetcars (trams), and because both cities are very multicultural.

All the best.

What have you done so far to bring your cat over? I've done all the research on how medically to prepare my cat but what is the cheapest in terms of actualy animal airfare. I've heard horror stories of $1000/animal and I've heard some people say you can find airfares for $200.
Any insight on this?

Thanks

It depends on what airline you use. For example, NWA charges 90/pet and Quantas allows you to transport your pet as luggage. One medium sized pet= two bags. We're in the process of moving with our dog and although the medical expenses seem quite outrageous, I think it's going to be worth it in the end. Overall Australia seems really pet friendly. I have been noticing on my rental searchers the odd "no pets" but it's not nearly as bad as it is in Canada.

Charliegirl is quite correct, rental properties, whether apartments or houses, are both hard to find and can be quite expensive, especially if you want to live close-in.
If you don't mind a little travelling consider a place in the outer suburbs which is close to either suburban rail or tram systems, that may be cheaper.
Good luck!
