For anyone moving over here I think I would impart one piece of advice - avoid Neds at all costs.
Theyre easy enough to spot with their tracksuits tucked into their socks, baseballs caps and bad jewellery.
I've been over here 1 year and 4 days . I live in Portobello. Nice place for an afternoon stroll on the beach, but I wouldnt recommend it if you were looking for long term accomodation. The nicest area in Edinburgh must be Stockbridge from what I've seen.
Compared to my area it's like Beverly Hills.
I can't even go into any of the local pubs there anymore since I seemed to get hassled everytime, occasionally because I'm black I guess.

Hiya,

I'm very sorry to hear about your troubles with Neds, but I must say I've been living in Edinburgh (not far from you, Abbeyhill area) for a year and 3 months now and I've not had any troubles with Neds yet. They are very loud, stupid and annoying but have never caused trouble to me personally.

Well you could always move to Northern England, the English where I live seem to love anything "exotic" from my personal experience Wink

For those of you living in England, neds are that same as chavs. I only just figured that out after living in London for 4 years and visiting family in Scotland twice a year. Beware of Burbury! (however ya spell it)

I think I've had more trouble from random people in clubs looking for a fight, who come out of nowhere and tell me they are going to punch my head in. Hmm, maybe it's just my magnetic personality.

I would've said Niddry or Liberton was far,far worse than Portobello but then I've never been to any of those areas after dark Wink
