Full process of obtaining J2 Visa pls

Hello,
I am recently married and my husband and I are both Canadian citizens. He is living in Miami and I am living in Ontario, Canada - looking to move down in March. He is on a J1 Visa and I am being attached with a J2 Visa.

We have had so many different answers from immigration that I want to make sure I have the right process as am quitting my job here and have already given notice on my apartment.

We have:
OUR MARRIAGE LICENSE
PASSPORTS
DS2109 FORM
HUSBANDS J1 VISA

Is this all I need to at the border in Detroit to obtain my J2 Visa and be permitted into the country? Are there any other forms etc that are required first?

Also, once I have the visa, am I allowed to go back and forth between Canada and the US?

Thank you for any help. It's all very overwhelming and nobody seems to be giving us a direct process exactly to follow.

That's all you need for entry into US on J2 status (you and your husband won't get visas, you'll have I-94s in J1 and J2 status. With that I-94 you will be able to live in US and enter US as often as you like for the duration of the J1.

Now, if you want to work in US while in J2 status, you will subsequently need to apply for an EAD, by filing an I-765 form with USCIS.


Just a quick note on marriage certificate (not license). The border prefers an official certificate issued by the registrar of the jurisdiction in which you marry. This can take months of course, so make sure you have the 'unofficial' one that was given to you on the day of your wedding by the officiating agent. This will suffice in the case of newlyweds.
