getting a UK passport, mum was born in british colony

Post Mon Jul 12, 2010 12:29 pm

Hi, I am a 25year old Canadian Citien trying to start the process of getting a British Passport, and since the helpline costs about $10/minute I thought I'd ask around here!
My mum was born in Kenya in 1951 when it was a British Colony and had a British passport until about 10 years ago. She gave it up for a Canadian one. I am wondering if I have a chance of getting a British passport... any ideas?
Thanks a lot!

The question is whether she remained a UK citizen after Kenya was granted independence. The fact that she had a UK passport after that date would seem to indicate 'yes'. Most citizens of former colonies lost there UK citizenship at independence, unless they were UK citizens by other means.

If she was UK citizen, then she can pass her UK citizenship to one generation born outside Britain.

It might just be better to file a passport application rather than go through the payphone site.

Btw, she never 'gave up' anything when becoming Cdn citizen.
