Getting a UK passport or Visa

I know this is probably asked all the time here, but every situation is different. I have been thinking of heading to the UK for an extended period of time, to stay and work etc. I'd like to get the best of whatever I would need to do this; visa, passport, etc. IE. if I could get a passport that would be best, and so on. Anyway, my situation is this:

I was born in Canada in 1985. My parents were both born in the UK, but I do not believe that they were citizens at the time of my birth (they had been here 8 years, I'm almost positive that they weren't). I understand that if they were citizens I could likely get a passport from what I've been reading on the official sites. But I'm working under the assumption that they weren't. Anyways, my grandparents are still UK citizens (on my dad's side, my mum's side grandparents have all died) and live in the UK. What would be the best option I could go with? I've read about something called an ancestry visa, not sure about the specifics on that. Anyway, any help would be appreciated.

Your best bet is giving the embassy a call..They can tell you right away. I would think you can't get a passport, but again, the embassy would know better than I

I believe all you need to do to get the Visa is prove your parents were born there. You might want to check into whether or not they were citizens or not but if they were born in the UK doesn't that make them citizens? I don't know.

As for the ancestry visa - that's what I did. You can get a 4 year Visa by paying the fee and proving your granparents were born in the UK - I showed a certified copy of my grandmothers birth certificate. You will also need your parents birth certificates and marriage certificates and also yours to prove the relations.

My parents were born in the UK in 1952 and 1954. They were married in the UK in 1973, and then moved to Canada a few years later. They were Canadian citizens before I was born, and gave up their UK citizenship, however I read this on the britishhighcommission.co.uk

"On 7 Feb 1979 the government announced that a new Nationality Act would be introduced on 01 Jan 1983 allowing all children born on or after this date to claim citizenship automatically from a mother born in the UK."

So I was just curious as to my options.

You'll definitely be eligible. You should contact the British Embassy or High Commission direct (by phone) and obtain some more information. Many people who have grandparents in the UK are eligible to immigrate here.

Start at:

The IND website is having issues from time to time but you'll get all the answers you need there.
