Getting Ancestry Visa Partner Status while living in UK

Post Sun Jan 20, 2008 12:38 pm

Hi,

My girlfriend is a Canadian with UK Ancestry Visa just moved to London,UK. I want to live with her in London. We are in a relationship for more than 2 years but lived separately in Canada. We can't prove Ancestry Visa Partner status.

What are our options?

Is it possible to get Ancestry Visa partner status while living in the UK together? How much time will that take? Can I obtain that while being there as a tourist? I can't find any information about this kind of situation at the UK Immigration web page.

Please help.

Thanks

I think in order to get partner status you *may* have to wait until she has indefinate leave to remain which would be when she has been there for more than five years.

In order to prove that you are an unmarried partner you must prove that you have been living together for 2 years exactly not a moment more or a moment less. To do this you will need two peices of official mail ( like bills or bank statements) sent to the same address in each of your names.

I'm pretty sure you will not be able to gain status if you go in as a tourist. :(

If you not eligible for an ancestry visa perhaps you could apply as a working holiday maker, that would give you a two year visa, of which you would be eligible to work for twelve months. If the two of you lived together for that period you could in theory apply for an unmarried partner visa at that time.

You could also get a fiancee visa or a marriage visa, although I'm sure that this option has been discussed and it ought to be a last resort anyways.

Good luck.

Are you able to apply for ancestry for any other EU country?

There is an open border policy for most EU countries so depending on where you are eligible it might be possible for you to apply in another country and simply move to the uk.

It's worth looking into. :-)
