Getting confused what document I should use...

Post Tue Jan 01, 2008 8:02 pm

OK. done some surfing on the internet but not sure which documents I'll need.

Checked the TN Visa, but it doesn't seem right.
The EAD seems a little bit more like it but something seems wrong.

My story:
I'm a Canadian with family in the US. My cousin has a successful restaurant and I would eventually like to open one of my own. He's invited me to go work at his restaurant and learn the ins and outs before I open up my own restaurant back in Canada.

I currently live in Canada and, after working in the US, would like to return here to open a restaurant. My cousin is a first cousin on my father's side. Not sure if that matters or not.

Can anyone tell me what Visa or paperwork I should be looking at?

Thanks in advance for any help.

The EAD is only possible if you have some sort of visa that allows you to work, they don't give it just all on its own.

You'd have to qualify for some sort of employment authorized visa, and given the scant information you've posted here, I can't think of one that would fit.

Hmmm. don't know what other info to give.

Well, I'm a university graduate with a B. Sc. I've been working in various fields now for about 11 years still trying to find out what I like (which is definitely nothing to do with the science field). My cousin in the states has a Japanese restaurant. I have an opportunity to open up a Japanese restaurant in Canada, but need to train first. The management stuff will come easy as I've been a manager before. The main training will come in the cooking methods (e.g. sushi preparation) which is why I'll need to go down to his restaurant and work there for about 1 year. I will essentially be his apprentice.

My major and past work experience (other than management) have very little to do with this job so I think the TN Visa doesn't apply to me. So if the EAD doesn't apply to me either, then I'm not sure what kind of work Visa I can get.

Hi

You may qualify for an investor (E visa). You should speak to lawyer and get more details based on your situation and to assist you in obtaining the visa.

Speak to several lawyers and make sure you feel comfortable with them.

If you need a place to start, look at the Lawyer Network - we have negotiated a $65 phone consultation for you which will have the lawyer review your situation and determine the best visa you qualify for.

Good Luck.

Wow! Thanks TNVisaExpert! I guess this is the way I'll need to go. There were very few things that popped up when I tried to google my Visa choices.
