Getting EU passport

Post Sun May 10, 2009 5:12 pm

Hi there,

My stepfather was born in Greece and a naturalized Canadian. My mother and I are Canadian. Does anyone know the process to getting a EU passport/ID card. I know I would first have to become a Greek Citizen. Does this take as long as someone immigrating to Canada/US?

Thanks for any info, advice or website.

As your stepfather is not your blood relative, you are not eligible for Greek citizenship through him. You would need to move to Greece, live there for at least 10 years, and then apply to become a naturalized citizen of Greece. Note that if you are male, you will be required to serve in the military for at least one year.

Oh, that's a bummer. Is that the same for my mother? They've been married for 22 years. I'm adopted by him does that make a difference.

Thanks for replying.

If they were married before 1984, your mother may be entitled to Greek citizenship through your stepfather. You might also be eligible for citizenship if you were adopted while you were a minor, I'm not sure about that one though.

What you're after is Greek citizenship, there is no such thing as an "EU passport" (unless you're an EU diplomat). Greece requires compulsory military service as pointed out above.

I don't believe being born in Greece is enough to get Greek citizenship as they operate on Jus sanguinis. Although, I have heard of an Australian getting Swiss citizenship from his step father who was a full Swiss citizen.

I am looking into getting an EU passport but I'm not sure how exactly to go about doing it..does anyone have any helpful advice for me?:) Also, how long does it take to recieve the passport once you have applied? I am going over to England in September to become an Au Pair and will need it before I fly over!

Like I said above, there is no such thing as an "EU passport" - you have to be able to claim citizenship in an EU state according to the laws of that country.

Countries won't just issue you a passport unless you are a citizen of that country. If you want to live and work in the UK, you either need to be a citizen of the UK or an EU country, or you need to apply for a work visa. Visit the UK Home Office website for more information. http://www.homeoffice.gov.uk/

Then I guess what I am looking to get is an Ancestory Visa? As far as I know I am eligible for this because my grandfather was a British citizen however I'm not sure which site would be best to get the information and application forms...
