Getting Married in Canada and Coming back to UK

Post Sun Nov 14, 2010 3:20 am

Hi there,

My boyfriend has asked me to marry him and we want to get married whilst on a visit to Canada in about a month. I'm wondering what the process is for getting a spouse visa and what we have to do to get married in Canada.

Do we need any special documentation to be able to marry in Canada? Any idea what sorts of wait times there are for getting spousal visas and if there are any special documents (other than the usual and expected) that are needed when applying?

Has anyone had any experience with this sort of thing?

Any advice you can give would be greatly appreciated as the Canadian gov't website is a bit tricky to navigate and the UK border agency website has a lot of dead ends.

Thanks a bunch!

hi there,

You will need apply for a marriage license at the local council office in Canada. Once you have that, it allows you to get married. Proof of id is required, passports should be sufficient. Then you can have the registry booked in the office or have your wedding read by someone authorised to do so.

Once you are officially married in Canada, you will need to apply for a copy of your Marriage Certificate document. Then you apply for the spouse visa through UK immigration, the person being sponsered needs to fill in the application online. You will also be called in for an interview to submit other supporting documents and then they post back your passport with the visa stamp valid for 2 yrs.

I've just gone through this myself and that's how it was. Good Luck
