Getting marry to a Uk citizen

Post Sat Feb 16, 2008 10:48 pm

Hello,

I would like to know if getting married to a Uk citizen will entitle me to work in Europe. I don't want a Uk citizenship at the moment & it seem all the information that I can find about getting married is about that! We were planning to work for a British company in France. We don't plan on staying in England very long. 1 month. I will also like to know how long could it take before I can start working. Though getting marry was a easy process.

Many thanks
Marie

visa for EEA dependents

Post Sun Feb 17, 2008 8:40 am

Hi Marie,

I'm in a similar boat myself except that I married an Italian and have now moved to UK (just last week). I'm still looking into the specific details but as I understand it all family of an EU citizen have the right to live and work with them (same country) under a directive in the EU constitution of Oct 2004. I believe the VISA you need to apply for is for EEA dependents (or spouse). In UK at least, it is free, but requires that the EEA citizen can prove they are able to support you (means 3 months of bank statements. I've heard the magic number of 10,000 in bank, but only second hand info). I don't know if you will have to apply for this VISA to each new country you want to work in.

The length of time for getting the VISA will depend on the particular bureaucracy in that country. But you should be legally able to work as soon as you have the VISA.

You can try looking on the ukvisas site

(sorry, but it won't let me post pages yet).

The other thing you will want to look for while living in Europe is somewhere that does proper Canadian passport photos--this can be very difficult as the Canadian standards are much different, and much higher, for the photos than with other counties. So best to start looking sooner rather than later.

Thanks ScifiGuy!

You send me to the right direction! Although I don't think we can get it, with the magic number and being seasonnal bummer living mainly in a van. I Think will be easier to keep on getting working visa and swap country every year!

But if someone have any suggestion for a visa how will enable us to work together even if we are poor with any residential proof, bills & expatriate. It will be very appreciated!

Caye - if you go up a level: http://www.canuckabroad.com/forums/ then there are forums for 'Canucks in Europe' and 'Canucks in France'. They might be able to help you more as the rules for Europe may differ to those in the UK.
We've got rocks and trees, and trees and rocks, and rocks and trees and trees and rocks and.water!
