Getting USA / California car insurance for Canadian car

Post Tue Aug 09, 2011 5:36 pm

Hi,

I'm starting work in California on a TN1 tomorrow, and have my Canadian car (BC plates) with me. I plan to drive it for 2-3 months until I can afford decent USA car, and then drive my BC car back to Canada to be sold there. I plan to get my California driver's license within 10 days (as per regulations).

Do you have any experience getting car insurance in California from a company that will insure a Canadian car? What company will do that, can you recommend anyone? I'm not planning to import the car into US as I'll be selling it in BC soon. I'd like to cancel my ICBC insurance which costs me an arm and a leg and get California insurance for significantly less that that.

Also I'm not even sure ICBC covers me at all, even if I claim to be on a vacation for the next 2-3 months?

Thanks

From what I know, Cdn insurance only covrs you in US if you are a legit tourist, and only if you tell them you plan to be in US long-term, so I would NOT be relying on Cdn insurance while LIVING in Cali.

Quick google search:

http://www.icbc.com/autoplan/moving/moving-from

Looks like you've got till the end of the month (20 days from your arrival) to register it in California.
