Giving Birth in Canada as Canadians Whom work overseas

Post Sun Jan 10, 2010 9:03 am

Hey all,
I am new to the form but have been overseas in Africa for over a decade. I have a general question in regards to giving birth in Canada. My wife is currently working in Cape Town and I in Eastern DRC and we are planning on starting to have a family soon (starting in the summer to try to get preggers). I am both Canadian and American and my wife is both Canadian and British (we both have two passports each), and we both have been residing outside of Canada for many years in Africa. I would like to know if we decide to give birth in Vancouver what needs to take place in order to do so: woudl she have to come home the requesite 3 months before the birth and then stay 3 months after the birth? As we are both Canadian and holders of two other passports, what legalese would our child have to go through? Should I be directing these questions to a lawyer? Any and all advice is solicited for anyone whom has gone through this before.....thank you for all your help; we are just doing the planning as of now.

Best Regards

By law, Cdn citizens returning to live in canada are leagally entitled to immediate provincial medical coverage. Note, you have to be returning to live, not visiting.

However, there are 2 provinces, ON and NB, that steadfastly refuse to grant coverage befor the 3-month waiting period (which, in reality only applies to new arrivals, and migrants from other provinces--which keep their old covergage for those 3 months)

Avoid those provinces, and make sure you are living in canada, and you should be covered.

The baby of course is immediately covered.

AGNELSON

Thanks for this advice, and as we will be coming to Vancouver (BC) we will avoid NB and ON. In regards to the living situation, we usually come home to YVR to visit but if we decide to give birth in YVR it will have to have a decision to live there.

Thanks again
