It's not for me personally, but my girlfriend is going to be coming over to live with me and my family in Canada. She doesn't have enough money to pay for college yet, and she doesn't like the idea of borrowing money for me to do so. She wants to get a work-permit for as long as she can so she can get enough to apply. As said, she's staying with us, so she doesn't have to worry about food or a roof over her head, but she wants to be able to earn money. She is currently residing in the USA.

She's graduated from high-school and has her diploma. Since she hasn't gone through college yet, she doesn't qualify for the skilled worker visa or anything like that. The current plan is for her to just visit for six months, or longer if she gets a student visa.

Looking at the work permit thing, it occasionally seems to talk about certain jobs that are eligible for a work permit, and at this link

Well, I tried to put a link, but it won't let me. 10 days, huh? Seems reasonable. It's on the CIC site.

It talks about not being eligible if you apply from inside Canada for a work permit, which seems a bit strange. You usually need an interview to get a job offer, right? Doesn't mean it's wrong, but, Gah.

Also, marriage is a possibility but not for a year two at the least. Parents, money, etc.

Thank you to anyone that read through all of this.

Any advice?

She needs an offer of employment and the job may require labour certification from Human Resources Canada.

Generally speaking you can't get it for simple service jobs because there is sufficient labour in Canada. There is also a provincial sponsorship scheme in Ontario for work permits.

I'm pretty sure she can apply from within Canada, provided she's legally here.

If she gets a student visa, she can get a job on campus. Book store, cafeteria, TA maybe.A friend of mine did that. Now she's teaching at the university full time.

Thank you both for your replies. It looks like we'll have to try and get lucky with a work permit, or try and scrounge up enough money for tuition.
