Golf teaching professional - what visa??

Post Sun Jul 18, 2010 7:59 pm

Hi all! I am a golf teaching professional (ie I work at a golf course and don't play on tour which would be a whole lot easier to cross the border) and my wife and I are looking at options to move where I can work year round in the better weather. I know I need to get a job first, but the type of visa would make that easier or harder. I don't see any kind of sport or recreation type job title on the list of TN approved professions, but just thought I'd start asking the question before I focus only on the H visa.

Also, can anyone tell me when my wife would be allowed to work - ie is there a time limit from when I start a job to when she can apply for one or can she be trying to get one now as well and we both just get our own work visas with different employers?

Thanks for any help!

Your only chance is getting ether an O or P visa. Golfers aren't eligible for TN or H.

Your wife would not be able to work as a derivative of any of these statuses. She would need to qulaify on her own.

A club would need to sponsor you for a green card for you to stay more permanently. They would need to then show that you were uniquely qualified over all other candidates before that would happen.

Sounds like an unplayable lie.

But I'm not going to golf, I'm going to work at a golf course so that does not qualify for a P or an O. I know there are Canadians working at golf courses so I know there has to be something that I would qualify for...??

Perhaps an H1 would be a outside possibility -- while a golf professional is a recognized profession by USCIS, there is typically an educational requirement to getting an H1. Probably an H2B seasonal worker would be more apt -- but it would be seasonal. TN is definitely out

O and P are probbaly non-starters as well, because, as you say, you won't be touring.

If you know some Cdns who work in your field in US, then you'd best get in touch with them. They may have been sponsored directly for Green cards (that used to be much faster than now) or perhaps they got their GCs by another method.

You might want to post this on a true immigration site, since there is no Cdn angle or advantgae for your process.
