First on your list should be a look into youth
hostels -- they are by far the cheapest way to go. I think there is an organization that one can join and it gives you "access" to info on world-wide hostels. I know that you want to have a loose schedule but do bear in mind that having a safety net is always a good idea.
VISA's - I think you'd be better off obtaining your necessary visa's before you leave. When I wanted to visit the Czech Republic a few years ago it took FOREVER to get my visa because of the limited English that was spoken. Had I gotten before I arrived in the country then I am SURE that I'd have spent less time and paperwork and stress.
Good luck on your adventure! If you wander into Austria (I live in Vienna), let me know! Always glad to see another Canuck on this side of the ocean! I can provide some tips and hints of what to see and what is just tourist-trappings and not worth the visit.
