Moving to New Zealand on a student visa program for a year and was wondering where a good place to go is.
Not really looking to be in the city but rather somewhere where there will be alot of other young people on working visas to make friends with.thinking more along the lines of something similar to Whistler

i thought greymouth, westport, hokitika looked nice.anyone know if there are lots of young people in those areas?

Hi There:
Why not try Nelson?
There is a lot of seasonal work here, and many young people pass through here all year round. I have lived in NZ for 20 years, and in Nelson for 6 years, and it is the friendliest city I have lived in here - not too big, not too small.
It's worth a go
Cheers, and enjoy your time here.

I guess it depends on what sort of experience you're looking for. If you wanna party with a bunch of foreigners, then yeah, Queenstown would be a good choice. If you want to experience NZ and what it's like to live here, I think Wellington is a great city to base yourself. It has great access to the outdoors, it has the night-life/culture/arts of a city without being too big a city, most people are pretty friendly and welcoming, and being a city it shouldn't be too hard to find work (depending on what sort of work you might like to do).

Nelson is definately a good suggestion, particularly over summer. It's warm, cute, quite a few tourists and seasonal workers going through.

But I like I say, depends on what you want to get out of your time in NZ Smile
