Got a dui in the states before I applied for a CA passport

Post Wed Jun 03, 2009 4:43 pm

I was born in Canada. I have a Canadian birth certificate. I lived in Canada until I was 6. My family moved to the states. I have a us social security #. I'm not sure how my parents got it, nor do i care to know. Its more of a don't ask don't tell. I got a DUI a few years back. I'm using a U.S. state issued driver license and a form of ID on my passport application. Will this come up when I apply for my Canadian passport?

There's no criminal background check as far as I know for applying for a passport.

It might come up if you ever apply for US citizenship though.

DUIs aren't as big of a deal in the US as they are in Canada, and even if you have been convicted of an offence, it doesn't necessarily bar you from getting a passport.

Your more relevant problem is your status in the US from the sounds of it, if you're there illegally and you leave, you may not be able to get back in.

that makes me feel alot better, I have more of a dual citizenship. I was born in CA to American parents. I just put I am legally able to work in the us and just put my ss # on the employment application. Never been hassled or deported. lol I have alot of family and friends in vancouver and the surrounding area so if i did end up getting stuck up north it wouldnt be that big of a problem more of a new experience and fresh start. How would I go about getting a drivers license in the BC area?

Have you actually ever applied for any documentation to prove your US citizenship, or are you just going on the good graces of employers never checking up on you? Because without actual documentation that you are a citizen, you technically are not.

To get a driver's license in BC, you must be a resident. You can most likely just trade your State driver's license for a provincial one. You can't keep both.

I'd worry about getting a US passport first, get a certificate of citizenship if your parents forget to register you, this is the relevant website.
