Got green card last month, now visiting Canada for long wknd

Post Sun May 03, 2009 8:59 am

Hello,

I'm a Canadian (Edmontonian, any others in NYC?), I got my green card in early April through my spouse, I've been out of Canada since July 2008. I didn't plan on staying in the US, so all of my belongings are in storage waiting to be sorted and sent to NYC. I couldn't go back to Canada (or at least with any sort of likelihood that I'll be let back into the US) until I got my green card.

My husband and I are going back to Edmonton via Toronto Airport for the Memorial Day long weekend to ship my stuff to NYC. I know I have to fill out US form 3299, do I bring that to the Us Customs Officer at Edmonton airport? It's being shipped via UPS once I've itemized the stuff.

As well, I've read/heard that people with green cards get static from US customs officials when returning to the US...if I'm only gone 72 hours will it be a problem? I *need* to be back in NYC for my job, so any advice on making it smooth (proper docs, etc) would be great.

One more thing - will my American husband need any proof/docs to enter Canada for the weekend since he's my husband (proof of job, etc)?

Thanks! I like to be cautious! :)

The form 3299 should accompany your belongings with the courier company. If you want, you can bring a photocopy with you to the airport, but there's no need.

You should have no reason to get "static" at the POE when re-entering the US with your green card. When they ask you the purpose of your trip, just tell them you're going home and hand them your green card and passport. Easy peasy.

Your husband also should have no difficulty entering Canada. The only document he'll need is his passport as ID and proof of US citizenship. The fact that you have a US green card negates his need for proof of ties to home.

Traveled many times on my Greencard and passport, and never had 1 problem. Actually if my USA spouse is with me--USA POE officials give her more of a hassle than me,lol
