Got my Right of Abode Now What?

Post Sun Nov 09, 2008 1:05 pm

I got my right of abode the end of August. I am moving to the UK in January for 1 year. I want to get a job right away. Can anybody give me any info on what I need to do before I leave Canada and what I need to do when I get there. I already have a place to live. I am moving in with my Fiancee. we got engaged in October. This is all new to me and I am nervous that I will forget to do something. So any advice anyone has would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I guess on arrival a priority is to make sure you've got your National Insurance number sorted out. This is like the Canadian SIN, and you'll have problems trying to work without one.

If you're in London, seek out a copy of TNT magazine (free in street-side bins in the central area) - it has lots of useful stuff in it for newcomers, including job agency ads in a variety of occupations.

Sorry if this has been posted time and time again, I did a search but couldn't quite find what I was after.

I just applied today, for my Right of Abode. My mother was born in England, she's still a British citizen. Both grandparents were also born in England. I'm Canadian, born March 4th, 1972. My wife is also British and currently living there, while I'm back in Canada trying to get all this sorted.

I've read some good stories about people obtaining their ROA rather quickly, does anyone on this site have any feedback they can throw my way? personal experiences etc etc?

Thanks kindly...
